Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats

Originating in Western Africa, the Nigerian Dwarf is a miniature dairy goat, ideal for a backyard mini-farm or a small-scale cheesery.
Due to their smaller size, Nigerian Dwarf goats are easy to handle and also make excellent pets.

At Mythos Farm, we raise show quality Nigerian Dwarf goats that produce well and live long, productive lives. To this end, we participate in official CGS programs: Classification, Milk Testing and occasional sanctioned shows.

Home
The Nigerian Dwarf goat was once a common fixture in zoos across North America, often referred to simply as the "West African Goat," and originally imported to feed carnivores en route to the zoos on long ocean voyages. The generic miniature goats in these times ran the gamut of type and style, with animals displaying an angular, lean dairy style, a short, cobby meat style, or a blend of both.
Over time, and after generations of careful selection, they gave rise to two breeds: our beloved Nigerian Dwarves (dairy) and Pygmies (pet/meat)

Nigerians can be any color or combination of colors, except for Agouti (a Pygmy color), which is heavily faulted. They are well known for being flashy and colorful, and that is a major factor in the pet trade.

The ears are erect and the facial profile should be straight. A convex or dished profile is a disqualification.

Nigerians may have blue eyes, and this is a dominant genetic trait (recessive in humans). This means that one parent must have the blue eyed gene in order for offspring to display it.

Maximum height for does at maturity: 22.5"
Maximum height for bucks at maturity: 23.5"

Heights are routinely checked at:
  • Official CGS shows
  • Classification
  • DHIA milk test (verification test)
  • One Day Milking Competitions

If a Nigerian Dwarf exceeds the maximum height at any age they are:
  • heavily faulted in CGS shows, usually going last place regardless of quality compared to others in the class
  • cannot score Excellent in Classification
  • cannot be ranked in Top Ten for production
